Steering Committee Minutes

  • Call to order

Al Winkeler called to order the regular meeting of the Master Gardeners Steering Committee at 9:03 on February 10, 2017

  • Attendance

In attendance: Al Winkeler, Joe Walker, Laura Steimel, Mary Carey, and Craig Morton

  • Secretary’s Report

Laura Steimel read the minutes from the last meeting. It was moved by Mary Carey and seconded by Joe Walker that the minutes be approved as read.  Vote was unanimous in favor.

  •  Treasury Report 

Current bank balance is (See treasurer for amount) presented by Joe Walker. Plant Sale supplies billed one time in January instead of spread out over several months.

  • MU Extension Specialist- Rich Hoormann

Not present for meeting. Master Gardeners 2016 Report was supplied to Extension Council in January.

 

  • Committee Reports

  • Speakers – Val Mertz. Speaker for February Meeting is John Miller on Purple Martins. Speaker for March Joshua Higgins. He will be speaking on Orchids. He will have 100 baby orchids to give away to members. He will sell extras.  Val will not be present for March Meeting. Requesting we meet and help Mr. Higgins to bring in plants.

  • Hortline- Patti Kolek. Hortline still being worked by members from home. Will most likely start back in office maybe in March.

  • Education- Mary Medina. February 18, 2017 is Great Backyard Bird Count 9- noon. Set up will be on February 17, 2017- will be multitasking: helping move office furniture, setting up room C, setting up Greenhouse for Bird Spotting, also replacing greenhouse fans and removing old ones.

  • March 11, 2017 Evelyn will have seed starting class. May have to limit size of class. March 18, 2017 – Cool season Vegetable Sale.  Mary will be helping with Farmers Market in Patti’s absent. We need to work on our mentoring our new members on volunteering. More to come on this.

  • Demonstrations Gardens- Mary Carey. Will be planning meeting early spring for all leads and volunteers. We will be getting donated tables for hoop house from Faust Park.  

  •   Greenhouse –Evelyn Franks. Fans will be installed on Friday and old ones removed.

  • Business

  • More to come on Advanced Training class set up by Rich.

  •  Issue on travel hours is still being reviewed by Rich Hoormann.

  • Hortline Training in March. Date still to be determined.

  • Still working on Credit Card process for plant sale. Should be ready to go.

  • Craig Morton has confirmed the 3 meetings in the St. Charles County Parks for the year. Speakers being provided and no charge to us. Dates are as follows:

  • May 25, 2017  Broemmelsiek Park

  • July  27, 2017 Heritage Park

  • August  24, 2017 Towne Park

  • We will be providing help for both Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts to work on Merit Badges. More to come on this issue.

  • Anyone can get background check is they want for working with youth. Application obtained at extension.  

  • Relocation from MG from other states- tabling till next meeting.

  • Possible tour to be planned at new members Family Winery- Frichtel Vineyards.  TBD

  • Warren County Garden Club Hortline requesting speaker. Mary Carey will contact.

  • We will be participating in Garden Expo at Fort Zumwalt Park May 6, 10 am to 2 pm. Mary Carey will put in application. We will also participate in History Day at First Capitol, June 13, 2017. More to come on this.

  • Officer Lenac wants assistance on setting up community garden for juveniles. Joe Walker will contact to see what they need.

 

  • Adjournment

      It was moved by Mary Carey to adjourn meeting and seconded Joe Walker. All approved.
